All crimes from
stealing to murder had harsh punishments. The reason for this was because they
had a feudal government, they though the peasants and others of low status would
rebel. There were so many peasants under their rule that if they did rebel it
would cause great damage. The minor punishments include paying a fine or being
put in a pillory. A pillory is a wooden frame on a post with holes to secure
your head and hands. Sometimes they were left in a
pillory for several days. Mild punishments included severing a body part. The most common severed body parts were the limbs. Major punishments were commonly death. You could be hanged, burned, beaten, or tortured to death. Some punishments depended entirely on the crime. For example, thieves’ hands were cut off and spies’ eyes were removed.
