Who decided the persons fate

There were two different types of trials, trial by jury and trial by ordeal. Trial by jury was used for the less serious crimes. The people who decided the accused fate was a jury of twelve men. The men were chosen by the villagers. They had to collect evidence in order to make the decision, if the accused was innocent or guilty. The twelve men also decided the punishment for anyone declared guilty. If you commit a more serious crime your fate would be decided in a trial by ordeal. Ordeals were more of a painful way to determine guilty or not guilty. In these cases they were relying on god to make the decision for them. They believed if the person was innocent god would assist them on usually escaping or doing something miraculous like swallowing a piece of bread without chewing.
