Assault between
peasants, debt, theft, name calling, public drunkenness and more, were all
considered petty crimes. Petty crimes were taken care of by local authorities,
then later the accused would be judged by a local jury court. Greater crimes
were under the authority of the king. If you committed a felony or was accused
of one, your case was not heard by the local Baron. Your case would be heard by
the Justice of the peace. You would be held in custody until the justice of the
peace visited your village one of the two times each year. Murder and arson are
two felonies that would land you in a royal court. Crimes against god were
enforced by the church. The church had its own court, lawyers, and its own
legal tradition. As well as a massive amount of rules and regulations. If
someone did not believe or practice what the church believed they were
punished. The worst punishment given by the church was excommunication. The
people who followed the church were not allowed to talk to those excommunicated.
They could not go to confession or attend mass. The children of the
excommunicated could not get baptized, and they would not be buried on holy
ground when they died.
